I haven't bought a license this year as each time I buy a license I never get chance to go out. If I can find a way of stopping heron and osprey from coming to the pond then I'll stock that. Last time I stocked it I lost everything to the heron and osprey so it was an expensive feeding session. I had it inspected and certified for Rainbow as well as Speckled so there's more choice for me.
Anybody got any ideas on how to stop the birds from visiting and feasting?

Most folks with small private ponds place nets over them along with Owl decoys. Both birds that you refer to are also totally protected by law.

I wasn't going to be shooting them or doing anything to hurt them. I'd put a net over but it's 72' x 144' so takes quite a bit of netting, as well as being a pain in the rear for me to keep taking the net back when I want to fish. I didn't know if hanging something like old CD's over the pond would keep the birds away, similar to how you can do with the garden and fruit.
Anybody come across anything that could stop them but also allow me to fish there? If putting carcasses of skunks etc would help then I can do that later this year.

Saturday for me, three runs will be hit, about as far as I can get in the backwoods. But, sadly, these araes are no longer secret with the opening of many a woodland last year.

Mike, life is short my friend. Get out once or twice. More than happy to take you on a hike, if you wish. Fishing, Trout anyways, is short, end June perhaps. The offer is there.

Appriciated Lee and its not because of lack of spots to go its a scheduling thing...life has suddenly got real busy this year and I have zero time for anything not even enough time to try to make time FFS

I have a good idea for a net you can use, and you would not have to pull the net back every time to fish cause the net come sin various sizes from about 1/2 mesh to about 4 i inch mesh, you can try checking around the HRM stores for nets that sell commercial gear, these nets are quite big, they are roughly 60ft long and 30ft deep, but I will ask a friend on Monday morning what he does to protect his pond, from the bird's and he lives in stewiacke, and is a commercial fisherman and is leaving on a trip Monday morn for a few weeks so he may be able to say whats the best thing to do
check here out it is in the HRM www.rainbownetrigging.com/categories.php?PCAT=Netting

thanks mharn. I'll look into doing that. Going to get my license this week so that I can go up to the brook and try to get some brook trout for stocking the pond. It won't feel as bad if I lose them as they'd have been free.

I don't know how much the nets are, but give rainbow net and rigging a call its in Dartmouth, on Simmonds drive, they can give you more of an idea what it will cost

Dumb question time: Is it possible to catch Brook Trout using spinners or does it have to be fly?
Bought my license yesterday and I'm hoping to go fishing for brook but I don't know how to fly fish, only spin. Don't know how much time I'll get out either so don't wish to learn how to fly fish and then find I don't have the time.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I caught them on spinning rods before just set your drag loose and reel gentle, I always catch mine on spinning
