I would like to bring up my recent experience in a store in the Halifax area with out brining up the name of the store (PM me if you wish to know).
I was in need of some fly tying materials and it was a Sunday so my usual go to was closed so i ventured to the other store which i already do limited business with as there pricing is ridiculous (aprx $150 Dollars more on rifles). I arrive to find they have very very limited selection which surprised me as fishing season is a month away now, but anyway i grabbed the few items i could and was browsing around when i hear a voice say excuse me do you tie flies. I turn to find a young man with a very confused look on his face. A young fly fishermen looking to get into tying flies and he has no clue on what to buy i proceeded to ask him what he fishes for and what flies he currently uses. I started grabbing materials when i stopped and asked if he had bought a beginners kit yet he smiles and says oh yes but it wasn't cheap i just paid for it. He opens the case and reveals not a beginners kit at all but a very advance tying kit with rotating vice and the whole 9 yards of the best of the best flying tools all in wooden case. I told him it was mistake but now he has the stuff i suggested he buy one of the starter kits that have material and hooks for simple patterns (the cheapest they had was $59.99) these identical kits are available online and in Canadian tire/Walmart for $29.99. He informed me that he wanted it anyway and bought it and went on his way.
Now you have the background story. What disgusts me is the store instead of offering him on their starter kits $79.99 with materials and vice and basic tools, seen he didn't know what he was looking for and sandbagged him into buying the most expensive kit in the store. Secondly they were too busy sipping coffees to help him get the basic materials to get started and he had to ask me for help which i don't mind but i don't get paid for customer service...
In my experiences it should be a good customer relations practice to help new comers and not sandbag them to make profit.
I'm sure all of you can guess which store this is, i've personally had to many bad experiences in this store with high price,s not knowledgeable and unapproachable staff, and now this to be bothered going in unless its a last resort
