I am heavy into Trout fishing. Love hitting the backwoods Deadwaters and Stillwaters. Anywhere off the beaten path is where you will find me. Sometimes I do not need to go far to find Trout, just off a bit from where most will not travel. I catch plenty in April-June, but only retain a few. I do not fish the lakes and do not fish along side the road. How about some stories from other Trout Fishers.

I've been known to do a wee bit of trout fishing myself...admittedly though not as much as I'd like to in the last couple of years. I fish mainly small lakes, trolling flies but also enjoy jaunts into the back woods for brookies in small tucked away streams ..... but always with the fly rod

I tried the fly rod many years ago. However was somewhat dissapointed when I hooked the alders in back of me and snapped the rods. For me is now spinner, exclusively.

Never tried using a fly rod but enjoy going out with the spinner. I know I've not managed to hook any trout for a while but have managed to hook a few trees, wouldn't be too bad if they were edible or had fruit on them as it'd be like a carnival game to get the fruit.

Spinner rods don't even compare to the rush of a fly rod! I love fishing the back woods lakes found a honey hole last year with some beautiful coloured bookies (my DP) Any of you gents hit the ice?

Not into ice fishing, at least in NS. Most years I would not trust the thickness of the Ice, so have not done any. This year appears to be the exception to that rule however. As well, as far as I understand it, Ice fishing also has alot of Poaching involved,(over limits) therefore I would rather not participate.

The lads don't know what they are missing Luke ...LOL Ice isnt my thing either its too cold to sit on a bucket and watch a rod on a holder....fishing to me is moving around, wading , casting ....but hey to each their own. Lee there is alot of illegal stuff going on in all aspects of life , doesnt mean that we have to become involved in it or be associated with it Brother ....all we can do is be who we are and stay true to what we have been taught by the last generation cause I know if I ever did anything illegal hunting or fishing my Dad would have booted my arse to the moon and back!

Yes Mike know what you mean about Poaching. Just reading some of the posts on the Fishing site, I know I am over reacting, but the posts appaear to be indicating/suggesting that poaching while Ice fishing is the norm. I know that is not true, but those that may read those posts might not be aware that we all are not poachers. Just the few are. BTW, nothing like walking a deadwaters with a pair of rubber boots..

lack of enforcement is the problem Lee ...its a sad state of affairs.... I am even seeing it in NB now the last 2 trips up salmon fishing I havent seen a CO and DNR has shut down the only 4 depots within 50 miles of the lower Miramichi watershed...I used to get stopped and checked atleast twice a day by either DFO or DNR and more on somedays depending on how many pools I fished or had clients fishing......its sad I was checked once last a year ago by DNR here while hunting with the kids for birds and I talked to the CO for about an hour ...it was the first time in 20 years being checked

I know what you mean Mike. I was not stopped at all this past Hunting season, first time that has happened that I recall. I can also honestly say I have never been stopped while fishing in NS. In the spring I am fishing, I would guess minimum 2 days a week and the weeks I am off eveyday. That adds up to probably 50 or more days easy, from April thru June, never seeing any enforcement. However i do not poach and therefore assume that most do not either. Maybe I wear Rose coloured glasses?

DNR numbers are way down they got cut back so the man can keep his pockets full, The only DNR truck i seen all season was at tim hortons lol kinda sad and funny all in one, People keep way more fish then they should on the ice, they seem to think because its stocked they are entitled i prefer catch and release so my kids and there kids etc can enjoy the sport

I agree with you. Sadly when the tax dollars are not enough to keep the roads repaired, the hospitials open and schools teaching the funding comes from other areas. Just Look at DND right now and the tremendous budgetary cuts they are undergoing. One thing that might help is if our License Dollars went back to the resource itself. But that currently does not happen. The one and only thing that we can hope for is the honesty of most people who Hunt and Fish. I for one believe that most out there Hunt and Fish within the laws.

All my fishing is 100% C&R and has been for years ...when I guided I would not take clients that wanted to retain fish. My little part to help native species I guess.
