OK lads do we have any other fly tiers out there if so show us your stuff!! I tie a bit of everything these days from trout and salmon flies to Striped Bass flies. Mainly over the yeas though it has been Atlantic Salmon flies , deer hair bugs and bombers being my niche. here are a few from the last couple of years.

Luke there is absolutely nothing wrong with that dry fly it will hook you alot of trout ...I don't fish dries as often as I should but when I do its usually an Adams or one that Perry Munro showed me years ago called the 2 hackle dry fly ...thats all it is 1 hackle for the tail and 1 wound as a collar hackle ...floats well and works.

where do you get your materials? I have suppliers all over the world that I used to deal with but the main ones are WW Doak in NB , Bearsden in Boston, and Alle's Fly Fishing in Texas (for hooks)

I should add that even though I get some fantastic deals from online suppliers and some great demo stuff I like to buy alot of stuff from small local shops along the river when I am in NB its great to support the local economy and the internet/big box stores has almost killed that.

what size hooks?

|
Post by lsf on Jan 10, 2014 12:20:45 GMT -4
I like a size 6 streamer hook for most of the places I fish Luke but if I am trolling bigger water I will use a 2 or 4 and if fishing smaller streams an 8 or 10...I usually have a wide selection tied up...lol

LSF do you see my mistake, need some pointers

Post by lsf on Jan 17, 2014 8:58:51 GMT -4
Luke the only thing that I see is that your wings are a little long ...proportions are a big thing in commercial fly tying as everything should look alike ...wing just past the bend of the hook tags and butts falling inline with the barb and point ....throat hackle should not exceed 2/3 the length of the body...dry fly hackle is = to the gap of the hook.....now all that being said THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR FLIES they will catch you lots and lots of fish ....if you choose to get more consistent with them than the above are some simple guide lines to follow ...there is a good old book from a lady named Helen Shaw called Fly Tying that talks all about proportions some libraries may still have a copy, worth a read. Only other advice I can give is sit down with someone who ties flies and watch them ....everyone has their own style but the fundimentals are pretty much the same. Hope that didn't sound like I was putting your work down cause I wasn't ....I hate answering when people ask for pointers...it always comes out sounding negative

come on really no need to be an a$$! Jkin thanks for the pointers i have an awful time with proportions, and my hackles turn out sloppy on some and perfect on others, this is only my second year at it, going to try a few more tonight with your pointers thanks!

You are doing well for only your second year ....There are some very good videos out there online as well...one other tip use 8/0 thread for tying....for 2 reasons your flies will be less bulky and you will learn to have a lighter touch
