Some nice bear Luke. Looks like it's coming close to hunting times.

the big fella I'm after makes two trips right before sun up and just after sun down.. 6:30Am and 8:30Pm.. as you can see above hes been out in daylight but only the once. I think he's picked up my scent and is feeling safer at night

To be perfectly honest I think it would be easier taking a blanket and going in the night before then spending the night out. If you did it after it had rained it should keep the scent down enough.
Are you walking in the same trail each time? It seems strange that he's picked up your scent unless he's actually in the area when you've been to the barrel and seen you around there.

A bear's nose is as good as any bloodhounds, CGE. They can tell ya how long the 'racing stripe' is in your underwear, just by smell alone !! Luke, Just a suggestion...but you should stop at Princess Auto or something and pick up a box of those disposable latex gloves. That'll help reduce your scent around the barrell...but more importantly you can change them out before handling your camera. Bears LOVE cameras for some reason. Whether it's the smell of bait on them, or the batteries, or just plain ol' human scent, that close to your barrell sooner or later one is gonna tear it up. Aaaaaannnd...you should wear them when you've got a bear on the ground and are gutting him out.

Good Suggestion! probably should be wearing gloves in the woods, i can get them dirt cheap at work just never use them ever gutting deer, setting stands, etc. I think your right and yeah i moved the camera back so its a little safer and i don't handle bait until i check the camera

Thanks for the advice Cochise. I haven't started with hunting bear yet, not sure if I'd like the meat and don't want to waste it. Got my licenses yesterday for everything else though and so starting to get itchy and wanting to be in the woods, instead of the office.

Bear meat is awesome, Ken. I absolutely love the flavour...but it is definately one animal that you'll notice a difference in the quality the older the animal is. 175 to 200 pound bears are best, IMHO. I've never hunted them, either, but I do have some generous friends. Luke, It's good you don't handle the barrell before going to your camera...for sure. All the stories ya hear of 'stolen' cameras?...I'd bet more than just a few are due to a cranky or curious bear ripping it off the tree. They've got to 4 or 5 of ours over the years, and we found them stomped into the mud or off under some brush. Not too badly chewed, and all the evidence of the culprit on the SD card.
