What's the basic equipment I need for snaring rabbits? I'm thinking about giving it a try but not sure if I need to do the furharvester/trapper course or if I can just go out an purchase some snares for them.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Just buy some brass snare wire and have at it...all you need is a habitat stamp...and you can snare on sundays as well

Ken, 20ga brass snare sire or steel watch some you tube videos and head into the woods set the snares where you see the rabbit trails, if you snare a rabbit and it stays alive whack it over the head swiftly done deal

Thanks guys. I'd use either the crossbow or the air rifle to the head if still alive, don't have anything to use as a club.
I'll get hold of some snare wire and watch the vids. Didn't know if I needed to do anything special for courses.

Usually used to put a foot on the head & grab them by the back feet and give a little tug if they were still alive...only ones that usually lived were if the snare was too big and they got caught around the stomach....good rule of thumb is make the loop no bigger than your fist

thats the rule i use LSF, and 3 finger widths off the ground, Ken if there is grouse in the area dont be surprised they will be in the snares as well

That's not good as I have to let them go now. Do I have to leave them if they've departed this planet? I'm just going to put them at the bottom in the woodlot near where I saw the tracks.

correct me if i am wrong but i believe you can keep an accidental catch as long as you are not targeting the animals, grouse are very rare to be in snares but can happen and the population IMO is up this year

Not sure about the accidental Grouse catch, but in all my time snaring I do not recall any in my snares. Memory might be fading however. I my last years of snaring I was showing my weak side, when I caught any alive, they would cry, I would release them. Same reasons why I gave up trapping as well. Last Coon I ever caught, #2 long spring, cried like a baby. That was it for me. LOL

182m from a dwelling.
Taken from our 'bible'
However, certain live trapping devices, in addition to box traps, (cable restraints and padded leghold traps) are now allowed within 274 m of a dwelling with permission from the owner of the land where the trap is set (these traps still need to be at least 182 metres from any other dwelling, playground, golf course , school or public building)

Are you setting some snares during your hunt this weekend Ken? hard to do unless there's snow or mud in the woods to see there runs

Nicely done Bob. I no longer have the access to be able to set snares, unfortunately, at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to in a couple of years.
